Festival Details:

The Vancouver Fringe is a celebration of every kind of theatre imaginable. Over 11 days in September more than 80 different theatre artists and companies come together to share their creativity on stage. Audiences are as varied as the performances with theatrical offerings for all tastes and ages. The uniqueness of the Fringe comes from the “everyone is welcome” selection technique—the Mainstage shows are literally drawn out of a hat, giving all artists a chance to participate. There is also a category for artists who find their own venue, Bring Your Own Venue (BYOV). The Fringe welcomes their performances as well, some of them in surprising locations like inside bathrooms or in the back of a car. Many of these are part of the Fringe Onsite program, which cultivates this type of site-specific work for the nooks and crannies on Granville Island. The Fringe revels in its identity as part theatre, part party. Every night of the Festival, Fringe artists, audiences, volunteers, and everyone involved, are welcomed to take in live music and share their experiences at the Fringe Bar. With over 500 volunteers supporting 700 performances in 11 days, the Fringe is a cultural experience unlike any other—bustling with the energy of an unwieldy stable of untamed creative beasts.

I do enjoy a good Fringe show! The shows are unjuried so you get a real scrumptious smorgasbord of acts. Ticket prices are excellent and you can't beat the atmosphere during the Festival!

Victoria was my first Fringe Festival. I found it very contagious - the more shows I went to the more I wanted to see. In some ways it seemed like a competition with no losers. I was relatively new in Victoria at the time and so it was a great way to meet people, talk about art and just have fun. I enjoyed the shows that came from other countries - the UK had a strong presence. There was one company named something like The Suitcase Company, I can't quite remember. They came year after year and they did not disappoint. Who could forget Two Trolls in a Baggie - a Canadian comedy troupe. I continued going to the Fringe when I went to Vancouver that at one time was held in the Main St/Broadway area and now calls Granville Island home. I like the Fringe because it is so accessible - adults, children, young, old! Not only are the tickets reasonably priced, there are usually some free events. And if you are in the right place at the right time you might even score a free ticket to a show - more bums in the seat are better than an empty house. If it's good, word of mouth will bring more theatre-goers. The festival takes place in the fall when things have settled down after a busy summer. Get out there and support local theatre - you will have fun!

Great theatre for under $15 a pop ... and the thrill of the unexpected. There's something for everyone at the Fringe!
