Festival Details:

The Eden Mills Writers' Festival brings together book lovers and Canadian authors in a beautiful and relaxed outdoor setting in the village of Eden Mills, located just outside of Guelph. Founded in 1989 by Leon Rooke, the Festival has taken place annually ever since.

The main event: On Sunday, September 18, Eden Mills will be hosting over 40 authors with sets for adults, young adults and children, and a Fringe set for emerging writers. Our adult and young adult programming is rich and varied – fiction, murder, mayhem, history, human drama, science fiction, humour, poetry and more.
This year’s stellar line-up includes: Johanna Skibruds, winner of the 2010 Giller Prize, John Vaillant (The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival), the legendary Sylvia Tyson, Priscila Uppal (Canada’s coolest poet), historical fantasy writer Guy Gavriel Kay, poet Susan Musgrave, acclaimed authors Andrew Pyper and Nino Ricci, mystery writer William Deverell, illustrator, writer and broadcaster Kevin Sylvester and Terry Fallis, winner of the 2011 CBC Canada Reads, to name but a few of the talented and eclectic group of writers who will read on September 18, 2011.

The children’s area is lively as children are immersed in a book-loving world sitting on blankets with friends and family, listening, learning and laughing. Our aim is to entertain through books; to open children’s minds to the possibilities, and to stir their emotions

Bring a blanket, lie on the grass and enjoy a literary picnic on the banks of the Eramosa River.

On Thursday, September 15, at and in partnership with the University of Guelph, the Festival presents Shelagh D. Grant, a leading historian in the field of Arctic sovereignty and author of Polar Imperative. Dr. Grant will give a talk on the unfolding implications of major climate changes on the Arctic, the impact of resource exploitation on the indigenous peoples and the current high-stakes game for control over the adjacent waters of Alaska, Arctic Canada and Greenland.

On Friday, September 16, the Festival celebrates another year with an evening of jazz, dance and the spoken word.

The Eden Mills Writers’ Festival is a member of the Guelph Fab 5*—the five fabulous cutting-edge arts festivals that make Guelph and the surrounding area such a vibrant place to live and work.

The Eden Mills Writers' Festival is a widely respected literary event dedicated to promoting and raising awareness of Canadian literature. The Festival is made possible by the support of our sponsors, including the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council, Musagetes Foundation, Scotiabank Michael Barnstijn and Louise MacCallum, TD Canada Trust, and the many friends of the Festival who devote their time and energy to make it happen.
